Fan District

Fan Area Historic District is an 85 block area in West Richmond between Harrison Street, West Main Street, West Grace Street, and Mulberry Street. It encompasses a large, late 19th-to early 20th-century residential neighborhood west of downtown commercial center of the City of Richmond. It is generally known as Richmond’s Fan District or Fan Area. The name comes from the way the streets fan out westward from Monroe Park, creating small parks at various intersections. Most of the houses were erected in the early 20th century and designed by a relatively few architects and contractors. Today is very much the same as it was in the 1930’s with the addition of many neighborhood restaurants, and bars too numerous to list here that are convenient for walking from one to another.
