Manchester residential and commercial historic district lies between parts of Decatur, Hull, Bainbridge, Perry, Porter, and Cowardin Streets south of Commerce commencing near the south end of the Manchester Bridge located along the south side of the James River. It is linked to the central business district by the Lee, Mayo, and Manchester Bridges. The district encompasses many mid-19th and early- 20th century residential and commercial buildings from the former City of Manchester and was the original seat of Chesterfield County and in 1910 it was annexed into the City of Richmond. It became an English settlement dating back to 1609. This area is currently undergoing rapid revitalization as seen in the adaptive re-use of the Old Manchester Lofts building into 80 condominiums in once was home to the Virginia Baking Company which manufactured crackers. Art Works, Plant Zero, Legends Brewery, Suntrust Operations Center, and UPS offices are located in Manchester. There is easy access to recreational opportunities along the James River which hosts mountain bike and jogging trails, rock climbing walls, and some of the best urban white water in the country.
